The Animal Welfare Act regulates how animals are treated in the laboratory and provides rules on housing, feeding and pain regulation.

Types of Research

Many questions about animal and human health can be answered using a variety of research techniques in studies on animals. There are two main types of research: discovery research (learning about diseases, what causes them, what could treat or cure them) and product research (creating new drugs, improved surgical instruments, or medical equipment). This section provides a broad overview of major animal research techniques.

Why are increasing numbers of animals sacrificed for research?
Although the number of mice used in medical research has increased in recent years because of their use in genetic research for diseases, the number of most kinds of animals used in research has actually decreased by 20%-50% in the past 20-25 years, due in part to the replacement of some animals with non-animal testing and the improvement of research techniques.
